News : Florence Can Wait – The Furness Returns

Furness Building Society returned to Morecambe this month when Sammy McIlroy, Morecambe FC Manager, cut the ribbon at the new agency office at Wright & Lord Financial Services, Princes Crescent, Bare.
Everton mad Rob Cairns, Chief Executive of Furness Building Society, cancelled his trip to see Everton play Italian side Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup so he could attend the opening personally. He did have the bonus however of chatting about all things football with the Captain of Morecambe Football Club (and fellow Everton fan) Jim Bentley and his boss Sammy McIlroy.
“This is an important move for us. We were approached by Wright & Lord Financial Services to consider opening an agency here at Princes Crescent as this area needs a facility now all the banks and other agencies have closed,” said Rob Cairns. “We were quick to agree and I hope very much that the local community will support us in our efforts to buck the trend”.
Wright & Lord Solicitors have only recently opened their financial services office for business and Director, Kay Murray, was keen to emphasise the business theory behind the opening. “We deliver our services at Victoria Street already, but the need for a banking facility at Bare to serve Torrisholme, Hest Bank and Bolton-le-Sands as well as Morecambe as a whole persuaded us that we could justify the second office. Wright & Lord Solicitors already have an office on Princes Crescent but we are sure that this second office with the Furness Building Society agency is the right way forwards. In this way we will be able to provide the community with a complete service. We are delighted to be involved with Furness Building Society who share our vision”.
Meanwhile, Morecambe Football Club have a special arrangement for Shrimps supporters to help them raise cash for the Club. Fans who open new accounts with Furness Building Society can ask for the account to be noted as a ‘Shrimps’ account. The Society will then pay commission to the Club every year. Rob Cairns confirmed that a similar scheme with Barrow Football Club has netted the club around £10,000 a year in free cash. Mr Cairns added, “I hope to be handing over a big cheque to Morecambe F C this time next year but we need to get the message across to as many folks as possible to make it work.”
